First Clip from Gareth Edwards’ Alien Invasion Film ‘Monsters’

An image from Gareth Edwards' "Monsters"

You probably haven’t heard of the new sci-fi film from director Gareth Edwards titled Monsters, but I’m guessing you’re about to start hearing a lot about it.

The premise follows a failed NASA mission to another solar system that brings alien life back to Earth.  Five years later and half of Mexico is quarantined as an “infected zone”, through which a US journalist agrees to escort a shaken tourist to the safety of the US border.

Not a lot else is known about this film, though it’s gathering a lot of buzz. The image above is the only pic released so far and will probably make you immediately draw parallels to District 9. But now the first clip from the film has just been released too. Watch it after the jump.

‘Repo Men’ Feature Red Band Trailer

Universal Pictures has released a red band trailer for Miguel Sapochnik’s Repo Men.

Repo Men takes place in a future where humans have extended and improved their lives through highly sophisticated and expensive mechanical organs created by a company called The Union. The dark side of these medical breakthroughs is that if you don’t pay your bill, The Union sends its highly skilled repo men to take back its property…with no concern for your comfort or survival. Remy (Jude Law) is one of the best organ repo men in the business. But when he suffers a cardiac failure on the job, he awakens to find himself fitted with the company’s top-of-the-line heart-replacement…as well as a hefty debt. But a side effect of the procedure is that his heart’s no longer in the job. When he can’t make the payments, The Union sends its toughest enforcer, Remy’s former partner Jake (Forest Whitaker) to track him down.

Check out the Trailer for Vampire Rock Comedy ‘Suck’

YouTube Preview Image

What do you get when you make a movie that includes appearances by Alice Cooper, Moby, Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, Alex Lifeson and Dave Foley? A reason to see a movie with Malcolm McDowell! Add a really hot vampire chick that can turn into fog and, well, I’m sold.

So take a look at the trailer to Suck, Rob Stefaniuk’s Canadian independent rock comedy that, amazingly, includes all of the above. Oh, and the hot foggy vampire chick is played by Jessica Paré (who can also be seen in the upcoming Hot Tub Time Machine).

Suck looks like a winner to me, but as yet there’s no release info available.

Stephen Lang Cast in ‘Conan’

Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch in "Avatar"

MTV have confirmed Avatar star Stephen Lang will play the major villain Khalar Singh in Conan.

Khalar Singh is a warlord and formidable warrior, brilliant, cruel, and on a quest to find the Queen whose blood will bring life to the demonic minions of Acheron. Conan will probably hate him more than Jake Sully did and if you know the story, you know why.

“I’ve accepted the role of Khalar Singh,” Lang told MTV on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday. “I have no idea how I’m going to do it. First I’m going to find out how I’m going to sound. I’m going to get back on a Mongolian pony and ride like the wind. I’m going to flash my scimitar. I’m going to cut the nuts off Conan and his father.”

‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ Season 2 Production Delayed, Andy Whitfield Diagnosed With Cancer

Spartacus star Andy Whitfield diagnosed with cancer

EW’s Ausiello is reporting the bad news that Spartacus: Blood and Sand’s Andy Whitfield has been diagnozed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The good news is his cancer has been detected early and so his prognosis is good.

“I’m receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me,” Whitfield said in a statement.

The first season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which has become one of my favorite shows on TV, is currently airing on Starz and will conclude April 16. Production on season 2, which was scheduled to get underway later this month, has now been delayed to allow for its leading star to undergo cancer treatment in New Zealand.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy,” said Starz president Chris Albrecht. “His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time.”

Best wishes to him and his family.

‘Futurestates’, a Series of High Quality Indie Short Film’s With a Vision of America’s Future

What will become of America in five, 25, or even 50 years from today?

That was the question posed by Independent Television Service’s Futurestates, a project that asked 11 renowned and up-and-coming filmmakers to take the current state of affairs in the United States and extrapolate them into stories of the nation in the not-so-distant future.

The result is a series of high quality short films that have been released as episodes of Futurestates Season 1.  Each episode provides a different filmmaker’s vision of American society in the not-too-distant future, fusing an exploration of social issues with elements of speculative and science fiction.

They are all excellent and some are simply superb. I highly recommend taking a look at them all here: Futurestates TV.
